Quite a number of you have signed up for notification of the release of the Aircraft Radio Simulator. With so much interest, I thought I would take a moment to give you an update on the Aircraft Radio Simulator’s development.
Here’s Where We Are
I have completed the automation of the simulator’s primary radio control head. The control head will allow you to set new radio frequencies as they are assigned by the simulated air traffic controller. Setting in a new frequency will trigger a new communication scenario.
When you change frequencies in the simulator, you should hear a new air traffic controller voice and new radio traffic from other simulated pilots. You will be presented with a new advisory or clearance that will challenge you to respond and communicate properly. By the way, setting an incorrect or unassigned frequency into the control head will produce the type of response you would normally get in the real world.
Frequency Error
For example, let’s say an enroute controller tells you to switch to the next sector controller on a frequency of 125.35 and you accidentally set 125.45 in the radio control head. You might hear a response like this: “Cessna 1234 Lima, Boston Center. You’re on this frequency in error. Return to your last assigned frequency.” Or, the controller may ask you for a position report to try and determine what frequency you should be on.
